Glacier-Related Hazards Along the International Karakoram Highway: Status and Future Perspectives

چکیده

The China–Pakistan international Karakoram Highway passes through the core area of “Karakoram Anomaly,” whose glaciers have maintained or increased their mass during a period when most worldwide receded. We synthesized literature and used remote-sensing techniques to review types, distribution, characteristics, causes frequency major glacial hazards along Highway. found that glacier-related could be divided into direct indirect hazards, including glacier surges, lake outburst floods, which are concentrated in East Pamir Hunza River Basin. In past 100 years, from surges floods only occurred once twice, respectively, appear suddenly, with hazard-causing process being short-lived occurring mainly summer. Glacial occur spring summer Among these, ice-dammed lakes highest flooding, formation outbursts closely related sudden advancement surge-type glaciers. Under background global climate warming, we speculate surge cycle may shorten increase. future, should combine models new field observations simulate, deepen our understanding physical mechanisms different hazards. particular, on-site monitoring carried out, include evolution subglacial hydrological systems, thermal state at base glaciers, opening closing drainage channels ice dams.

Down Syndrome: Current Status, Challenges and Future Perspectives

Down syndrome (DS) is a birth defect with huge medical and social costs, caused by trisomy of whole or part of chromosome 21. It is the most prevalent genetic disease worldwide and the common genetic cause of intellectual disabilities appearing in about 1 in 400-1500 newborns. Although the syndrome had been described thousands of years before, it was named after John Langdon Down who described ...

The 2015 Surge of Hispar Glacier in the Karakoram

The Karakoram mountain range is well known for its numerous surge-type glaciers of which several have recently surged or are still doing so. Analysis of multi-temporal satellite images and digital elevation models have revealed impressive details about the related changes (e.g., in glacier length, surface elevation and flow velocities) and considerably expanded the database of known surge-type ...

A surge of North Gasherbrum Glacier, Karakoram, China

Between 2003 and 2007, North Gasherbrum Glacier on the northeastern slope of the Karakoram mountains in Asia underwent a dramatic acceleration, during which a velocity wave propagated down the glacier. There was a significant transfer of ice from up-glacier downstream, which resulted in a strong surface elevation increase over the lower tongue, but only a moderate advance of the glacier snout. ...

Metaphors along the Information Highway

It is absolutely essentially that the metaphors of use surrounding the NII and its component services be examined critically. We need to do this for two reasons. The descriptions and explanations of the NII and its component services will affect the societal debate around implementation and social impacts. Some of the metaphors used to describe the NII, however, distort the real effects and pos...
